Intel i960 & JT Processors

Intel created the first i960® processor 10 years ago.

Intel's continuous investment in technology enables the latest member of the i960 processor family, the JT-100, to set a new level of performance and upgradability. There is a strong commitment to the i960 processor family at Intel, with more processors to come! Driving Down the Cost of Processor Performance Whether the application is a high-speed network router, an automotive Global Positioning System (GPS) or a super high-resolution printer, Intel's growing i960 processor family offers designers more choices than ever before. The Intel i960 processors give designers the solutions they need to drive down the cost per MIPS in today's most innovative products. Upgrading to new performance levels has never been easier, thanks to the growing line of scalable i960 processors. The i960 processor family features an upwardly code-compatible and a cost-effective performance roadmap to tomorrow's data-intensive 32-bit applications.

Hitting Your Market Window

With a wide range of evaluation tools, i960 processors help developers hit their stringent time-to-market targets. There are literally hundreds of comprehensive tools available for the i960 processor family. The i960 architecture offers a robust and well-understood platform for system developers, and the Intel Solutions960® catalog lists more than 200 available hardware and software tools for the i960 processor. To make product development even faster, Intel's "No Run-around Technical Support" program provides developers with a single point of contact that helps to resolve multi-vendor support issues.

Upgrading to the Right Performance, at the Right Cost The Intel i960 processors provide a 32-bit RISC-based architecture with 32 registers to couple high performance with low silicon cost. The simple and efficient "CISC-like" i960 processor instruction set enables easier programming, while improving code density and performance.

From entry-level processors (Jx, Sx, and Kx series) to superscalar chips, the i960 processor family offers a wide range of innovative features that enhance processor speed, performance and efficiency. The superscalar i960 processors include the CA, CF and Hx, which are able to execute multiple instructions per clock cycle. In addition, the cross-family object code compatibility inherent in i960 architecture lets designers scale product performance to cover a wide variety of price and performance niches, while protecting existing software investments and speed time-to-market. And, if you are interested in enhanced server I/O performance, Intel offers the i960 RP/RD I/O processors. i960® processor family

Intel JT Processors

The new Intel i960® JT processor: high performance without a high price

As designers of embedded products strive to meet the performance demands of increasingly sophisticated software, the problem becomes adding performance without adding significant cost.

The i960® JT processor, the newest member of Intel's i960 processor family, brings the performance benefits of 100 MHz speed combined with a 16 Kbyte instruction cache to further enhance performance.

Also included on the processor is a 4 Kbyte data cache with a direct-mapped, write-through feature that supports the enhanced performance of a single-cycle instruction cache. The new JT-100 processor adds RISC-based performance without paying a power penalty, delivering 45 MIPS per Watt at 33 MHz.

Even though it is big on performance, the i960 JT processor also features a compact price, which makes it an excellent choice for cost-sensitive high-volume embedded applications. To further keep your design costs in line, the i960 JT processor was designed to support the use of inexpensive commodity memory.

Fast design upgrades
The i960 JT processor is 100 percent socket and code compatible with the entire i960 Jx series processors, so it's easy to migrate from the entry level 16 MHz all the way to the new JT-100. To further speed time-to-market, the 80960Jx series is object code compatible with any other processor in the i960 processor family.

Compact size
An industry first from Intel, the new Mini-PBGA package is about the size of a U.S. dime. These compact dimensions make it ideal for small form factor applications or anywhere higher port densities are needed in space-constrained applications such as remote access equipment. For example, the i960 JT processor is an excellent choice for modems designed to support emerging ADSL and other digital subscriber line applications.

Ideal for imaging and networking
Other embedded applications include PC imaging devices such as inkjet and laser printers and multi-function peripherals, in addition to network bridges, routers, hubs, switches and RAID mass storage applications.

Tools and support
Intel supports the i960 architecture with a complete tools and support program. Hardware, software and services are currently available from more than 200 vendors, ranging from real-time operating systems to evaluation boards. Support for the i960 JT processor also includes a Jtag emulator and CTOOLS 6.0 with seventh-generation C++ support, including compilers, assemblers, debuggers, monitor, a linker, a loader, libraries, utilities and manuals.

Start designing now
The new i960 JT processor makes it fast and easy to migrate existing embedded products to higher performance and new value-added features without incurring significant additional costs.

These same benefits make the i960 JT processor an ideal choice for new embedded applications that require high performance, low power and easy future upgrades.
